Experiential Learning

You’ll gain hands-on experience caring for individuals with chronic health conditions through 600 hours of clinical rotations in your own community. Under the supervision of an advanced practitioner, you’ll learn to assess a patient’s immediate health situation, provide medical interventions, and more. Your rotations may take place in settings such as:

  • Urgent care centers
  • Emergency rooms
  • Ambulatory care facilities

Rotations must occur outside of your current place of employment.

In addition, you’ll visit our campus in Rochester, New York for one pre-clinical immersion and one acute care immersion. Immersions are opportunities to practice critical nursing skills hands-on, experience our state-of-the-art nursing facilities, and strengthen your connections within the Fisher community.

Prepare to Become an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at Fisher

Nurse practitioners specializing in acute care can expect fast-paced shifts, frequent contact with patients, and decision-making to care for critically ill or injured adults. Most acute care nurses work in settings such as:

  • Inpatient or hospital settings
  • Emergency departments
  • ICUs
  • Specialty clinics

Regardless of where they work, acute care specialists serve patients experiencing complex chronic illness and injury. By developing treatment plans for patients, they are able to help prevent future complications and manage patients’ pain.

To become an acute care nurse practitioner, you must earn an advanced nursing degree and pursue certification. Graduates of our online M.S. in Nursing program are prepared to pursue national certification offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
